"Himalayan Honey," "Himalayan Cliff Honey," or "Mad Honey" is 100% natural wild honey from the high Himalayas of Nepal. The world’s largest honey bee, called Himalayan Giant Honey Bees (Apis Dorsata Laboriosa) collects the nectar from the rhododendron and other wildflowers in the mountains. The Himalayan honey bee is twenty times bigger than a regular honey bee.
This unique honey is also commonly referred to as “mad honey” due to the presence of a type of neurotoxin called grayanotoxin, which is responsible for hallucinations and psychedelic effects. However, the effects of the honey might differ depending on its age and the season it has been collected in.
The “mad honey” is found in different colors, like dark brown, red, and white crimson, with a thick and viscous consistency. Also, it can be bitter in taste with a distinct floral aroma. With its unique taste, many use mad honey in various culinary practices and ways of consumption.
We work with Gurung tribes and locals of the Annapurna and Manaslu Himalayan ranges of Nepal forests, where the tribal honey hunters collect the honey. For the indigenous tribes, honey hunting is an ancestral art of collecting honey that has been going around for thousands of years.
They acquire a special set of skills to go through the dangers of getting honey from the cliffs by only using delicate ropes and baskets. However, they have exceptional teamwork and the courage to tackle any hurdles they face during the hunt.
Since the Giant Himalayans build their nest on high cliffs, the honey-hunting process is more dangerous and challenging. Hence, Cliff Honey is the most unique and rarely found honey in the world. Also, it has been known as “Bheer Maha” due to its making in the cliffs.
Interestingly the giant honey bees suck the nectar out of the rhododendron or other wildflowers, which make them sick, and they produce psychedelic honey.
